Echocardiography

Echocardiography, also known as an echocardiogram or echo, is a non-invasive ultrasound procedure that uses sound waves to create images of the heart and its structures. It allows doctors to assess the heart's size, shape, and how well it is functioning. This test is used to diagnose various heart conditions and monitor their progression.

For most standard transthoracic echocardiograms, no special preparation is needed; you can eat and drink normally and continue taking your usual medications. However, if you are having a stress echocardiogram or a transesophageal echocardiogram, specific instructions will be given by your healthcare provider, which may include fasting, stopping certain medications, or avoiding caffeine.

General Preparation (Transthoracic Echocardiogram):

  • No fasting or dietary restrictions: are typically required before a standard transthoracic echocardiogram.
  • Continue taking your regular medications: unless your doctor advises otherwise.
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing: that can be easily removed or unbuttoned to allow access to your chest.
  • Inform your healthcare provider about any medications: you are taking, including over-the-counter medications and herbal supplements.
  • Inform your healthcare provider about any implanted devices: like a pacemaker.
  • Arrive 15 minutes before your appointment: to allow time for check-in and any necessary paperwork.
