TUL (Transurethral Ureterolithotripsy) is an advanced minimally invasive procedure used for the treatment of ureteral stones and selected kidney stones. The procedure is performed without any external incision. Using a thin instrument called a ureteroscope, the surgeon accesses the urinary tract through the natural urinary passage, identifies the stone, and fragments it using laser energy (most commonly Holmium laser). The stone fragments are then removed or allowed to pass naturally. Due to its high precision, reduced tissue trauma, shorter recovery time, and excellent success rates, TUL has become one of the standard treatment options for urinary stones in modern urology.
TUL is recommended for patients with stones that cause urinary obstruction, persistent pain, recurrent infections, or those that are unlikely to pass spontaneously. Advances in flexible ureteroscopy, high-resolution imaging systems, and laser technology have significantly improved the safety and effectiveness of this technique. Most patients can return to normal activities shortly after the procedure, and in some cases, a temporary Double J ureteral stent may be placed to ensure proper urine drainage during the healing period.
